Program

Old Goolwa Cemetery Revegetation and Protection Project

About the Program

This project aims to revegetate the buffer around the old Goolwa cemetery. The old Goolwa cemetery holds some of the last natural bushland in the area. The buffer will protect the remnant native vegetation and increase the habitat value of the site. The site is a Bush for Life site where volunteers manage the bushland. Coordinated and supervised teams of volunteers will undertake the planting works.

Birdwood Primary School

About the Program

Through the Northern Resource Management team students will research and revegetate areas within the school into wetlands. Information boards will be included in wetland areas so students can update environmental tips for the community each fortnight. Students can conduct research in the area of global warming. Approximately 10 Olympic pools of water are wasted through runoff in school grounds. The proposed wetlands will allow the school to store and reduce water runoff. Students will be directly involved in creating the wetlands, researching appropriate plants. They can share this information with families at home.

Eden Hills Primary School

Walking School Bus

About the Program

This program will see the school establish a Walking School Bus with parents leading. The Walking School Bus concept involves children being "picked up" from designated spots around the area by two parent leaders, a "driver" and a "conductor" and walked to school. The aim is to encourage children to walk to school, reducing the use of cars, improving attitudes and personal health, raising awareness of the environmental responsibilities and reducing congestion around the school.

Grey Box Community Group Inc

About the Program

The Grey Box Community Group will distribute 7000 waterwise native plants to over 300 residents of the City of Mitcham in order to preserve and enhance the vegetation of this locally endangered species of Grey Box. Planting and information events will be held with the local community where topics such as ecological sustainability, biodiversity conservation and waterwise gardening will be discussed. The project will coincide with other World Environment Day events.

About the Program

This project aims to teach students the importance of recycling and the importance of looking after the school and local community through hands on educational activities. Food waste will be used as mulch/compost and then used in the gardens around the school and in the local community. Older students will take on a mentoring role to teach younger students the importance of looking after their school.

Mawson Lakes School

Sustainable Gardening Project

About the Program

This sustainable gardening project will be lead by a team of 20-30 year 5-7 students, their teacher and parents/grandparents. This team will research and establish a sustainable garden including companion planting, worm farming and composting systems. They will mentor younger classes and promote sustainable gardening practices at school assemblies. They will inform the school community of how families can use sustainable gardening practices at home, in a small space.

About the Program

The 'Sustainable Garden' project involves students from the Special Education Class to develop a community garden that uses rain water for sustainability. The project involves guest presenters and helpers from local community groups such as Trees for Life that will work with students to develop a garden area that is self sufficient and develop valuable hands-on skills incorporating the development of numeracy and literacy skills in a practical activity.

About the Program

This is a 'cross-generational community involvement project' will provide urban children with the opportunity to become actively engaged in the process of developing organic gardening skills, contributing to the conservation of the environment, learning about healthy food production and being involved in its growth and preparation. This will occur in partnership with teachers, parents, aged members of the community, the neighbouring Kindergarten, Early Childhood Centre and neighbouring primary school.
