About the Program
World Environment Day Festival 2012 will showcase local sustainable building, energy and lifestyle solutions, local food and entertainment, creative workshops and demonstrations focusing on reusing items usually destined for landfill, and many recycling opportunities. The day includes a welcome to country, sustainability talks, a recycled fashion parade and is a family friendly event. In addition100 trees will be planted to offset the project's carbon emissions.

Retrofitting for Sustainable Buildings in the Tropics

About the Program
This project will see the publication and launch of a "Retrofitting for Sustainable Buildings in the Tropics" booklet. There is currently no locally relevant, tropical resource available for residents wanting to address architectural design elements to improve energy and water efficiency of an existing house. The booklet will be available free of charge in print and online which will be launched with a public workshop on retrofitting for sustainable house design.

Washed Away Waste

About the Program
The Washed Away Waste Project involves students developing a range of litter awareness programs across a cross section of the community to reduce the environmental impact of litter in waterways. Prep - Year 3 children will produce an eBook highlighting danger to marine life of litter that will be distributed throughout the district. Residents will design and produce awareness signage highlighting history and value of local waterways.
Gulf Barramundi Restocking Association

About the Program
This project will enable the association to establish a fish waste composting project linked to the establishment of a small hydroponic vegetables activity through volunteers and community input. Karumba is a key recreational fishing destination with 100,000+ visitors annually. Currently the considerable quantities of fish waste is collected and deposited at council rubbish dump, this project will see this waste redirected to compost which is then used in the hydroponic vegetable garden.

About the Program
The Hall State School will produce Sustainability Kits to encourage the wider community to adopt recycling practices at home and at work. Kits will contain quizzes, games, instructional DVD, fact sheets and a website designed by the students. This project will allow students to transfer the environmental skills they learn at school to their home life and encourage the broader community to be more sustainable in their daily life.
