Bathurst Regional Council

Jordan Creek Rehabilitation

About the Program

This project will see Bathurst Regional Council partner with Conservation Volunteers Australia to educate and engage community volunteers in the rehabilitation of Jordan Creek in Hector Park. The planned works include planting of native riparian trees, shrubs and grasses and weed removal. A CVA team will be on-site for five days with a Community Planting Day to be held on the Sunday. Regular working bees will then be hosted by Council's Community Engagement Officer every three weeks.

About the Program

The KBT Community Nursery is managed and run by volunteers who raise seedlings and propagate plants. Local community members are able to obtain these free of charge. The Nursery is used by a High School to train students in propagation and volunteers are trained in sustainable practices and organic gardening principals. Community Workshops are also held quarterly to increase the skills of local residents. This project will provide the local community with regular updates on nursery activity by erecting an interchangeable sign.

About the Program

Utilising principles of peer education, young people who are active members of Burwood Council's Youth Advisory Group (BYAG) will provide awareness and education on recycling and reusing of fashion items to groups of local youth through a series of awareness-raising and creative workshops. Participants will create fashion items from recycled clothing and other resources for a fashion show to be delivered by BYAG, for young people during Youth Week 2012.

Whole School Waste Reduction and Recycling Project

About the Program

This project will allow the schools to expand the successful K-6 paper/cardboard recycling program, by incorporating the high school. Expansion of the program requires doubling the size of the present skip bin and installing class facilities. In addition shredded paper that the school office produces will be utilised by creating fertilizer bricks, made of shredded paper and manure, procured from the hens and cows in the agricultural plot to use on school gardens.

About the Program

greenCONNECT is a team comprised of members of the refugee community who are provided with training to ensure public community events are able to maximise recycling and reduce waste sent to landfill. The team sets up and monitors bin stations, ensuring potential waste streams are uncontaminated. The project also gives positive visibility to an otherwise marginalised group by encouraging community interaction and providing much-needed Australian work experience.

About the Program

Illawarra Vocational Services is an Australian Disability Enterprise employing people with disability in paid employment and building sustainable business to maintain respect and dignity within the workforce of 60+ employees. Through this project IVS aims to reduce its green waste from 200 to 0 tonnes by creating green mulch solutions to sell to the local community.

About the Program

This project will see areas of Marmong Creek cleared of rubbish and weeds, production and maintenance of pathways through the site, plant local native species in and around the site, including the adjacent shopping centre complex. The group will engage local school groups to help with clean up and planting days, monitor water quality in the creek and instruct children's groups in water testing and water bug surveys.

About the Program

The Little Green Thumbs program aims to encourage children to engage and understand sustainable living practices and the protection of their natural environment via a dedicated recycling and composting programme. A native garden and waste management program will also be established in conjunction with local businesses. This will be a family-based participation program involving the broader community aimed at increasing awareness and involvement in the environment.

About the Program

From evaluation of sustainability programs it has emerged that Sydney's renting households want information on how they can reduce their ecological footprint when constrained by renting. The NCC will research and publish an e-booklet on "sustainability when renting" providing easy strategies to reduce this demographics' ecological footprint. The NCC is regularly approached as an information source and this booklet would assist in the dissemination of knowledge that households want.

About the Program

Workshops will be delivered to a number of early childhood services in order to build the capacity of staff, children and families to learn and live 'green'. Workshops will assist early childhood communities to conduct an audit of environmental practices and develop connection with the curriculum. The project will coordinate new resources, as well as support individuals and groups wishing to critically examine their environmental practice. Centers will showcase ways in which environmental education can be integrated into programs successfully through demonstration, mentoring and case studies.

About the Program

Peel High School and the Peel Wetlands Landcare Group will celebrate Biological Diversity Day. Students will learn about "Sustainability in our Environment." A number of different stations will operate and student groups will rotate every 20 minutes experiencing all the stations. These stations include; water testing, bug surveys, plant identification, fish role play, energy generation, wetland tour and planting native plants.

About the Program

At Hastings Public School staff, parents and students have been regenerating rainforest, wetlands and koala habitat for 10 years. Large camphor laurels were cut and chipped, koala browse trees planted, and paths built so students can study and work in the school's wetland and rainforest. Now a Landcare working bee is held every Monday at the school, with volunteers helping the school's Environment Friends with weeding, mulching and planting.

About the Program

This project will see a portable outdoor classroom created that can be made available to schools and communities in the Macquarie valley around Dubbo. Each board will feature a key river management issue (pollution, carp, water conservation etc) and challenge the reader to answer questions that will improve their knowledge and provoke them to take action. These will be placed along river trails for class or community events.

Winter Active Dung Beetles - Soil Carbon Champions

About the Program

Winter active dung beetle species are not widely distributed on the south coast, especially around Berry. This project will identify existing spring to autumn active species on local farms and release two winter active species. The project will include workshops on identification, monitoring, soil health and carbon and develop a resource package with case studies for regional farmers.

About the Program

An enterprise learning event which builds year 9 student awareness of local native foods, food miles, links to carbon emissions, impacts of food choices on local food resilience and community sustainability. The end product of the three day learning event will see students using this knowledge in the development of local food resource calendars which are electronic and added to schools websites for use as a whole of community resource.

About the Program

The Energy Saving Projects will include a simple home energy audit to identify energy use patterns and ways to more efficiently use/save energy and therefore decrease carbon emissions, followed by a more detailed home energy audit for identified high energy users. The project will also facilitate bulk buying of solar hot water systems, the bulk buying of Solar PV systems and education by preparing a "Sustainable living booklet", all to improve environmental impacts.

Trees In Newcastle Seed Collection Crew

About the Program

This project will involve the recruitment and training of a new volunteer crew to collect, process and store local provenance seeds. The project includes printing of recruitment flyers, design and production of a training manual, 6 seed collection training workshops and 6 seed processing and storage workshops. The resulting seed will be propagated to supply native plants for Landcare groups in the Hunter. The volunteer crew will continue to collect seed after project completion.

About the Program

This project will implement Stage 1 of the Unkya Reserve Creek Management Plan by removing mature weed trees from the creek banks. Removing the weed seed source will significantly remove the environmental pressure placed upon the biodiversity of the riparian zone. Without competition from weeds, native vegetation will regenerate and the creek banks will be resilient. An established group of volunteers will assist the project by providing additional labour.

About the Program

This project will see the association host, organise and facilitate four environmental, educational network development workshops and community information markets to promote awareness of environmental issues in the Upper Brunswick Catchments using a seasonal approach to land management. In addition to local residents involvement will include local environmental groups and community-based non-profit organizations, in order to promote a united approach to land management principles.

Rural Villages Tree Planting Project

About the Program

The Rural Village Tree Planting Project will encompass the planting of 160 native trees within four rural villages within the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area. Wagga Wagga City Council staff will work with community groups to organise four planting events where residents can plant, water and mulch the trees.
